Atlanta
is the capital and largest city in Georgia with an estimated population of 542,822. However, the entire Atlanta metropolitan area has more than 5.9 million people, making it the ninth largest in the country. The city of Atlanta is known as the "the city in a forest," due to the large number of lush trees within the city. With the highest number of trees within any major U.S. city, it's the major reason Atlanta was named "Place of a Lifetime" by National Geographic. The city is host to the annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival, held in April when the native dogwoods are in glorious bloom. Atlanta is a modern city and doesn't retain much of its historic Old South look, as many other southern cities do, such as Savannah and New Orleans. Instead, it's viewed as a progressive city of the "New South" with beautiful modern architecture. It's the 7th most visited city in the world, and home to the world's largest aquarium, which opened in 2005. Directly across from the aquarium is the World of Coca-Cola Museum. These two attractions are within walking distance of the Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena and other downtown Atlanta attractions. Atlanta is also home to a unique underground shopping and entertainment complex. The city was ranked as the 9th best city for the arts in 2010 by American Style Magazine. It's home to many places of historical interest, as well as museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and the Atlanta History Center. Atlanta's Piedmont Park is host to many festivals and cultural events throughout the year, and next to the park is Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Northwestern Georgia, in the Atlanta region, has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are usually mild with occasional cold snaps, summers are hot and humid. In winter, warm maritime air can bring spring-like weather, while at other times strong Arctic air can plunge temperatures into the teens. This region receives lots of rainfall, which is relatively distributed throughout the year, although spring and fall are drier than winter and summer. Some years there is no snowfall, but the average is 2.5 inches per year. The heaviest snowstorm on record brought 10 inches in January, 1940. Blizzards are rare. Ice storms usually cause more problems than snowfall.
