Helen
is a "Bavarian-Alpine" village nestled on the Chattahoochee River in White County, northeast Georgia. Tourism is the main industry of the town, which has full time population of about 450. Helen was formerly a logging town that was in serious decline when it reinvented itself as a replica of a classic German-style town in the Alps. The only difference is this is the Appalachians - not the Alps. All buildings in town represents the classic south-German Bavarian Alpine style, and cobblestone streets and alleys complete the look. Helen caters to the tourists with many events and festivals, shops and restaurants. An Oktoberfest is held during September, October and November, which is the longest such festival in the south. It's also one of the most beautiful times to visit, when autumn leaves typically peak. An annual hot-air balloon race is held the first weekend in June in Helen and other events include Bavarian Nights of Summer, Winefest and Volksmarch. Recreation in the area includes fishing, tubing, hiking, camping, golf and more. Nearby attractions include spectacular Anna Ruby Falls, which is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest. The winter holidays is another great time to visit Helen, when lights twinkle in all the shops and a huge Christmas tree is decorated in the town square. Helen is a colorful, unique place to visit anytime of the year, whether for a family getaway or a romantic retreat.
