Hartwell-Lake
is one of the "Great Lakes" of Georgia, located in the northern part of the state near the South Carolina border. It is a man-made reservoir created by the Hartwell Dam on the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers. Hartwell Lake has more than 80 public park sites, five marinas, picnicking facilities and camping. The northern part of the lake extends into the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The lake comprises almost 56,000 acres of water and has a shoreline of 962 miles. There is a wide difference in soils, terrain and climate surrounding Hartwell Lake, which results in a very diverse wildlife habitat. More than 250 species of birds can be found here, along with 40 species of mammals and numerous aquatic, reptilian and amphibian species. Some of the recreational activities at the lake include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, boating and other water sports, birdwatching and photography. East of lake are rolling hills and farmland. To the north/northwest are lakes, rivers and lovely country roads to explore. Most of the back roads are paved and good for bicycling, as well as driving. Hartwell Lake has easy access to I-85 and other parts of Georgia, making it very convenient getaway destination.

Northwest South Carolina has a humid, subtropical climate. Areas further north in what is known as the "Upstate" area has less of the characteristics of a subtropical climate than places along the coastline. Even so, the winters are mild in northwest South Carolina and summers are warm and humid. Cyclones and thunderstorms are possible in the northern part of the state in summer and early autumn. Tornadoes are possible in the spring and again in November. Precipitation is abundant all year long, and snowfall averages six inches in the northwest. Freezing rain is more of a possibility in South Carolina than snow.
