Ellijay
is a city in north-central Georgia that serves as the seat for Gilmer County. In the 2000 census, the population was 1,584. The town of Ellijay lies at the confluence of the Ellijay and Cartecay Rivers where they come together to form the Coosawattee River. Ellijay is know as the "Apple Capital of Georgia" and is host to an Apple Festival each October. The county provides more than 600,000 bushels of apples each year to the U.S. As part of Gilmer County, Ellijay is known for more than its orchards and fresh, crisp apples, though. It's surrounded by the lush, forested Blue Ridge mountains and meadows sprinkled with wildflowers. There are 11 mountain trails for hiking, 59 trails for biking and 15 horseback riding trails. Whitewater rafting, horseback riding, golf and more are available in Gilmer County. Ellijay is 20 miles from Amicalola Falls State Park and 20 miles from Fort Mountain State Park. Aside from the Apple Festival, several other special events are held in Ellijay and Gilmer County. There is Mardi Gras in the Mountains, Cherry Log Pickin', which features local Bluegrass pickin' talent, and the Annual Taste of Ellijay. The town of Ellijay offers lots of historic ambience, combined with Southern friendliness and charm. It's the type of place where you'll find plenty to do, but if you choose, you can do nothing but relax while you take in the stunning mountain views.

North-Central Georgia, like most of the state, is classified as having a humid subtropical climate. The Chattahoochee River divides the state into separate climatic regions with the mountains to the north being colder than the rest of Georgia. The average temperature for north-central Georgia in winter is 39 degrees F. There is little snowfall in the state, although northern and central Georgia receives more than other areas. Many summer days exceed 90 degrees F., with humidity. Rainfall is widespread and September and October are the driest months. Severe weather in the form of tornadoes and cyclones are possible, but not common.
